Just what turns a house into a home?

News at Howes Estates | 19/10/2015

If you’re a home owner, or if you aspire to one day own your own then you will know a home is infinitely more than just bricks and mortar. A home is a place where you raise your family, you create memories there, experience major life events there, and it’s a base for a large part of your life.

If you can recall this far back, just think about when you got your first good school report and you went home, proud as punch to show your parents! Or when you got your first job and you proudly walked in the door knowing you were making all the right moves in life. These are just two very basic ideas of things that create the foundations in a house to transform it into a home – they are the things you just can’t replace.

Research has confirmed that almost two-thirds of homeowners said it was the sentimental items, photos, letters and drawings their children created, for example, that were more precious to them than the costliest items they owned.

Further research, a survey of 2,000 UK homeowners documented that as many as 41% of people cited photos as their most valuable or sentimental item, followed by items that had been inherited via a relative (13%).

Letters, jewellery and drawings from children were also featured in the survey.

It almost goes without saying that, apart from jewellery, these possessions are unlikely to hold any financial value if lost or stolen, there is always the possibility that they could get damaged or lost.
